Florida’s Capital City

The Territory of Florida was created by an act of Congress in 1822 after General Andrew Jackson invaded Florida driving the Seminole Indians from Leon County and Spain surrendered Florida to the United States.

In 1825, Tallahassee became the capital of the new Florida Territory because it is half ways between St. Augustine and Pensacola which were the two populated areas at the time.

The City of Tallahassee is the county seat and the only incorporated city in Leon County. It was originally named in the 16th century by the Apalachee Indians who lived here.
