If you live in Tallahassee or have just moved here, we’ve compiled a list of critical things you need to know.

Connecting Utilities

The City of Tallahassee Utilities provides electric, water, sewer, natural gas and solid waste services to your house or apartment.

Drivers License and Learners Permits

  • New Drivers License or Learners Permit – if you are getting a drivers license for the first time or a learners permit, you are required by the Florida DMV to complete a four hour Drug and Alcohol/DATA course. For a Florida DMV approved DATA course you can complete it online.

Secondly, you will also need to complete a written test on Florida traffic laws and road signs. This written test is available online for a fee for ages 15, 16 or 17. Once you are age 18 or older, you must go to a Leon County drivers license office to take the written test on road signs and road rules.

For a new drivers license you should make an appointment to take the behind the wheel driving test. Learners permits do not need to take the behind the wheel driving test (only the four hour Drug and Alcohol/DATA course and the written test on Road Signs and Road Rules.)

Identification Requirements – you must bring two original forms of identification to prove your birth date such as an original birth certificate and a social security card. If you are under 18, you will need a parent or legal guardian to sign a consent form.

  • Speeding Tickets and Traffic Violations – if you receive a speeding ticket in Tallahassee or a ticket with points and you want to avoid points being added to your drivers license, you can take a traffic school course.

How it Traffic School Works – you have the first 30 days to pay the ticket and inform the Leon County Clerk of Court that you plan to take traffic school. Next, you have an additional 60 days to finish traffic school and turn in your Certificate of Completion to Leon County Clerk of Court, 1920 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32303, phone: 850-577-4278.
