Tallahassee’s Great Outdoors

As you drive around Tallahassee and the Leon County area, you’ll find rolling hills, canopy roads, and a touch of Southern hospitality. The area north of Tallahassee has the largest number of original plantations (71 of them) in the country.

You can easily enjoy the outdoors by driving south to amazing beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. One of the local favorites is St. George Island.

You can also stay close to Tallahassee by visiting Wakulla Springs, one of the world’s largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world. It was also where some of the original Tarzan movies were filmed. Many of the surrounding lakes and rivers are spring fed with crystal clear, refreshing water. These are great spots for swimming, canoeing, picnicking, or camping.

Take a step back in history and visit some of Tallahassee’s 122 properties registered with the National Register of Historic Places. Some are outdoors like the Natural Bridge Battlefield is the site of a battle in 1865 between the Confederate force and Union (Federal) force. And some historic properties are indoors like the Florida State Capitol (Old Capitol) which is a very cool to visit and see the original furniture, clothes, and learn about Florida’s history.
